An email from the adoption group, recieved November 2020
I'm sure our phone box is typical of boxes all across the country - it fell into disuse and by 2015 was offered for adoption. It was adopted by Belper Town Council but responsibility for refurbishing it was delegated to the Saint Faith's Community Association, a community group based in St Faith's Church just down the road from the box. It took a while, but in the end we finished repainting it and installed book shelves so that it operates as a free book exchange.
I'm pleased to say it is well-used by local people - there is a steady turnover of reading material which is sometimes augmented by jigsaw puzzles and DVDs. It has proven particularly popular in 2020, providing access to books when libraries were closed. It is also pleasing that we have had no problems with vandalism and, indeed, it is generally kept tidy with minimal effort.
The photo is from May 2015, before we adopted it and when the telephony equipment was still in place.
